Oregon Rules/ Laws:
- Life Jacket Rules – 250-010-0154 Personal Flotation Devices
- Wearable Life Jackets (Type III) Each boat must have a properly fitting, U.S. Coast Guard-approved Type III life jacket for each person on board.
- Life jackets must be readily accessible (not stowed away).
- Throwable Device (Type IV) Each boat must carry one Type IV throwable cushion on board.
- Inflatable Life Vests – Type III inflatable vests are allowed.
- However, you may not remove the inflatable vest unless there is also a non-inflatable Type III vest on board.
- Responsibility for Co-Anglers or Passengers
- Each person is responsible for their own life vest.
- Tournament anglers must bring and maintain their own compliant life jacket.
- Tournament Rules: Receiving a Citation is grounds for disqualification.
Sound-Producing Devices
- Boats under 39’4″ (12 meters) must carry a sound-producing device such as:
- Whistle or Compressed air horn
- A whistle attached to a life jacket is a simple way to comply.
Fire Extinguisher Not Requirement
- Required unless the boat is:
- Outboard-driven or Under 26 feet
AIS (Aquatic Invasive Species) Permit
- Out-of-state boaters must have a $20 AIS permit.
- Boating without a permit can result in a $50 fine and disqualification.
- Oregon boats must have valid registration decals.
Columbia River Fishing License Rule
- If you’re fishing from a boat on the Columbia River mainstem, either an Oregon or Washington fishing license is valid—you do not need both.
- This applies to the shared waters of the Columbia River that form the border between the two states.
- However, if you enter a tributary, you must have the license for the state in which the tributary is located.
- Example: If you’re fishing in the John Day River (a tributary in Oregon), you need an Oregon fishing license, even if you launched from Washington.
